Cookies and similar technologies

A “cookie” is a small piece of data that your web browser receives from websites you visit (including this one), and which is stored as a file on your hard drive. Cookies are often necessary to make a website work, others to give you a good user experience, for example remembering your language preference, if you’re logged in to your user account or to analyze website traffic.

We use various techniques on our website, including cookies and similar technologies, to allow us and third parties engaged by us to recognize you during your use of our website, and possibly to track you across several visits. Please see our Cookie Policy for further details on cookies, and the next section for specific information relating to online tracking and advertising.

Necessary cookies: Some cookies are necessary to get the website to function properly or for certain features, like ensuring that you can move between pages without losing information that was entered in a form (for example if you added a Power Box to your shopping cart). They also ensure that you stay logged in to your account. Such “session cookies” only exist temporarily and if you block them, the website or certain functionality may not work properly. Other cookies are necessary for the server to store options or information (you have entered) after a session has ended (after you left the website) and can be stored up to [24] months.

Performance cookies: We also use third-party analytics cookies (for example for Google Analytics) to record and analyze how visitors use our website (potentially beyond one session) to optimize it (and related offers) and to better adapt to the our users’ needs. Before we use such cookies, we ask for your consent, which you can withdraw at any time through the cookie settings here [link]. Performance cookies can be stored up to [24] months and further details can be found on the websites of the third-party providers (linked to from our Cookie Policy).

Marketing/advertising cookies: We and our advertising partners have an interest in and try to target advertising as precisely as possible to optimize our marketing efforts and budgets. We use cookies for this purpose that will allow us to display advertisements on our (or others’) websites that we think will interest you. Before we use such cookies, we ask for your consent, which you can withdraw at any time through the cookie settings here [link]. If you give your consent, you will be shown ads we think will interest you. If you don’t provide your consent, you’ll still see ads, just less relevant ones. Marketing/advertising cookies can be stored only for a few days or up to [12] months, depending on the type of cookie.

Online tracking and advertising

The process of serving online ads based on predicted interests relies on recognizing cookies that are stored by web browsers (for example when you visit our website from your laptop) or advertising IDs set on mobile devices (for example when you visit our website from your mobile phone or tablet).

Interest-based advertising is a way of using information about your web browsing activity to group you with other users into interest groups and serve you ads based upon these interests (to make them more relevant to you). Relevant ads can also be delivered based on website content you have recently viewed (‘retargeting’).

We currently use the following technology for online tracking and advertising on our website:

Social media widgets: Our website integrates social media features, such as the Facebook “Like” button, Instagram, YouTube or other widgets. These social media companies may set a cookie or employ other tracking technologies to recognize you and collect information about your visit to our website. Your interactions with those features are governed by the privacy policies of those companies.

Social media advertising: We display targeted advertising to you through social media platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube etc. Companies operating such platforms have interest-based advertising programs that allow us to direct ads to users who have shown interest in our offerings while those users are on the social media platform, or to groups of other users who share similar traits. We may share a unique identifier (a user ID or hashed email address) with these platform providers or they may collect information from our website visitors through a first-party pixel (like the Meta Pixel), in order to direct targeted advertising to you on the social media platform. These advertisements are governed by the privacy policies of those social media companies that provide them.

Meta Pixel: We have integrated the Meta (formerly Facebook) Pixel on this website to analyze how effective our Facebook ads are and to optimize our marketing and advertising efforts. Meta stores and processes the collected data and may link them to your Facebook account (if you have one), also for their own marketing purposes. Read more in Meta’s privacy policy. If you have a Facebook account, you can also opt-out from such advertising in your personal settings.

Facebook Page: When you visit our Facebook Page, Facebook collects and uses information described in their Data Policy (under “What kinds of information do we collect?”). Facebook provides statistics and insights to help us understand the types of actions that people take on our Page (“Page Insights“). Page Insights are aggregated statistics that are created from certain events logged by Facebook servers when people interact with our Page and associated content. This helps us understand how our page is used and how to improve it. For this processing, we are joint controllers with Facebook and have agreed data protection responsibilities. Facebook, however, is the controller for the general operation of the platform and you can read their privacy notice here. You can also object to advertising here by changing your personal settings.

How to stop seeing personalized ads

In the US: Digital Advertising Alliance (DAA)

In Canada: Ad Choices: Digital Advertising Alliance of Canada (DAAC)

💡 Through these self-regulatory program, you can opt-out of interest-based advertising and also report any issues with interest-based advertising that you encounter. Also, if you don’t want to receive targeted ads on your social media platforms, you may be able to adjust your advertising preferences through your personal settings on those platforms.

GDPR rights

Your data protection rights as per the GDPR include:

Access and rectification: You can request access to or a copy of the data we process about you and ask us to fix data that’s incorrect.

Erasure, restriction and objection: In certain circumstances, you may object to the processing of your personal data, ask us to delete data or restrict our processing of your data. Note, however, that we cannot delete any data we are required to process (for example for bookkeeping/accounting/tax purposes).

Data portability: In certain circumstances, you may ask us to transfer your personal data to you or to another organization.

Lodge a complaint to a data protection authority – but please contact us first so we can try to help you.

Sharing your personal data

We don’t share more personal data with others than what’s strictly necessary to run our business efficiently and securely. This is typically:
- Public authorities we are obliged to report to.
- Our accountant, lawyer and others helping us in a professional capacity.
- Data processors (service providers that process personal data on our behalf, for example related to website development and hosting, marketing and advertising tools, secure online payments, shipping and similar).
- IT support, if necessary.

To protect our business, we don’t publish further details (like the names) of our data processors. Please contact us if you’d like to know more.

Security and international transfers of personal data

To protect your personal data, we take reasonable precautions and follow industry best practices to make sure nothing is inappropriately lost, misused, accessed, disclosed, altered or destroyed.

If you provide us with your credit card information, the information is encrypted using secure socket layer technology (SSL) and stored with a AES-256 encryption. Although no method of transmission over the Internet or electronic storage is 100% secure, we follow all PCI-DSS requirements and implement additional generally accepted industry standards. We are also conscious about data minimization and the other fundamental principles of the GDPR.

Since we are an American company headquartered in the United States, personal data collected on this site will be transferred to and processed in the US or elsewhere. If you decide to make a purchase, i.e., you become our customer, you accept this transfer of your personal data.

We try our best to safeguard your data at all times, so we assess vendors and third parties (like their business reputation, security measures, if they’ve had any data breaches and overall GDPR compliance) as part of our efforts to ensure that.

Other checks may include assessing whether a country outside the EEA offers an adequate level of data protection (has obtained an “adequacy decision” from the European Commission) or having the European Commission standard contractual clauses (“SCCs”) in place with processors. Please contact us if you have any questions about this.
